When Love Fades, Ask God To Renew Your Heart

It’s time to repent.

Nevertheless I have this against you, that you left your first love. (Rev 2:4) It happens all the time. The fresh blush of love fades like a rose, leaving only dropped petals with the faint scent of perfume. Passion wanes until nothing remains but mental acknowledgement. We are saved because we know our place in heaven, not because we are wildly in love with the bridegroom. Remember therefore from where you have fallen, repent and do the first works. (Rev 2:5) It is sin to be removed from our first love. We must repent. We must ask God to renew our passion, our excitement, our giddy love of Him. We have to be so filled with His love that we think of Him constantly, like a new grandparent who is delighted to show everyone baby pictures. It’s a terrifying sight to see how far we have moved from that first love that God adores so much. Are we loving Him for what He will do for us? Because of His promises? For a future hope? Or because He is the most amazing source of love in the universe? Beautiful beyond description, full of mercy, and kindness on a level impossible to fathom? Father, bring us back to our first works. We repent and ask forgiveness for allowing our love to be blunted by our own needs and desires. We open our hearts and bask in Your presence, joyful to be loved by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
