Because we have this God-shaped hole in our spirit, if we don’t fill it with God, then we suffer for it. So much of what people struggle with comes from not feeling loved. Anger, jealousy, resentment, pride–there are so many issues that we carry when we don’t receive the love that God has for us.
His love is eternal, that is, it has always been and will always be. It is bigger than our hearts can take in. It fills all our needs and desires. People will always disappoint, but God never will. He loves us when we screw up. He loves us when we have no idea where He is. And I don’t mean that He thinks nice thoughts about us, He thinks massive, loving thoughts about us.
Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love. Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you. (Jer 31:3) We say that we found God, but the truth is, He has been drawing us to Himself all along. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. (Jhn 3:16) Jesus knew exactly what He was getting into, and He did it lovingly, for us.
Stop for a minute and try to think about how much God loves you. It’s really an exercise in futility, because we can never fully understand how big that is, but it’s good to try because we are reminded again of the love that we need. We were designed for love and when we don’t have it, we’re in trouble. Take it in and let Him fill you. It’s the best therapy ever.
