I went to a lecture last night at the SETI Institute (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). The talk was on the media craze of the end of the Mayan calendar. I was horrified by what I heard. I was not aware of the rampant fear that people have about this event. One quarter of the US population live in fear that the world is coming to an end. NASA receives email daily asking for help, for more information about what they should do. Kids are so freaked out about it that some have committed suicide. An older person wrote to ask when he should put his dog to sleep so it wouldn’t have to suffer.

It’s all so sad because there is nothing to be afraid of. I’m going to cover some areas of concern in case you have friends or family living in fear about this.

December 21st is not the end of the Mayan calendar. Their calendar ran in cycles. December 21st ends the current cycle. December 22nd begins the new cycle and extends for thousands of years. The Mayans believed the world would go on for a very long time. There is no Mayan prophecy of the world ending this month.

There is some belief that a planet called Nibiru will collide with the earth in December. There is no such planet out there. If it were, it would be as bright as the moon and you could go outside and see it. A planet moving in on the earth would distort our gravitational field. That is not happening.

The earth’s gravitational field is supposed to shift. Scientists say that it happens every few million years, but it is not happening now. If it were happening, your GPS systems would fail to work.

There is some fear about three days of darkness. There’s no justification for any event to create that.

Let’s just call all these rumors what they really are, lies. We have an enemy whose goal is to kill, steal, and destroy. He wants to create panic and keep us in a spirit of fear so we won’t live in freedom. The Mayans were just people. They didn’t know anything apocalyptic.

We actually have better knowledge than the Mayans had because we have the Word of God. We know the there will be a day of judgement  but those of us who walk in salvation actually look forward to it. There is no fear when you live under the shadow of His wing. There is no fear when we know the Author and Creator of all life.

If the lies of the enemy have made you afraid, repent for believing them and embrace the truth of God’s grace in your life. Perfect love casts out all fear and perfect love fills the heart of God. You have a destiny and a future with hope and joy. Rejoice in the Lord and ignore the lies.\
