Jesus is the light of the world. When we accept Him into our heart, He puts His light in us, and He expects it to shine. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Mat 5:14-16)
Putting your lamp under a basket is living in shame and fear. We’re afraid of what other people would think of us if we let them know what we really believe. But here’s the funny part, if you put your light under a basket, you don’t really believe it anyway.
If you truly believed that Jesus is the Light of the World and He gave you new life, you would live in freedom and joy. Your conversations about your faith would flow freely and naturally. No one wants to be preached at, but there are people genuinely interested in spiritual things and they want the real thing, not some watered down version that you think they will tolerate. They want to know that God loves them extravagantly and that He heals and blesses and protects those who trust in Him.
Don’t be afraid to be real. People who aren’t interested will pass on your message, but there will be others who will ask for more. You don’t have to give out tracts or memorize evangelizing strategies, just be real. Talk to people about how awesome God is and what He’s done for you. Be a friend. You light will be safety in a dark place.
