My Kind Of Shepherd

Allow God to lead you to places you do not know.

He brought you next to the water for a reason–drink deep!

I despise the old image of God throwing lightning bolts like Zeus onto unsuspecting and innocent people. What could be more misleading. The truth is that God’s plan is to lead us to Himself, not make us run away, mystified about who He is. David said, He makes me to lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside the still waters. (Ps 23:2)

What are the still waters? They are more than the serene setting of lambs lying in the grass next to the water’s edge. The still waters are the depth of knowing God, the unlimited resource of His knowledge and grace. Still waters run deep. We can sip enough to quench our thirst, or we can explore what lies deep and discover the hidden mysteries. He wants us to be thirsty, like the deer panting for the water, so He can unwrap what He’s been holding only for those who want more. Will you be satisfied with the sips, or do you want to dive in and go deep? Walk with Him on the tops of mountains and soar on the wings of the morning. He’ll take you places that show up in your dreams and haunt your days.

Following this Shepherd is not the faint of heart. It’s a life of adventure and that always includes uncertainty. There will be times of not knowing, but He’ll always be there, rod and staff in hand. Follow Him to the sill waters and dive in. New horizons beckon.
