It’s Good to Mourn When You Need to

Allow the Holy Spirit to comfort you.

Blessed are those who mourn.

The joy of the Lord is our strength, but there is also a time to grieve and mourn. We are made as emotional beings, so expressing those emotions is appropriate when there is loss or disappointment. That’s why the Holy Spirit is called the Comforter.

Bottling up emotional trauma is a bad idea. You have to find a way to let it out and give it to Jesus. Find a place where you can have a good cry, then hand it to the One who knows your heart better than you do.

There’s no lack of faith in needing to grieve. Even when someone you’ve lost is a believer and you know you’ll see them again in heaven, you’ll still miss them here and that’s ok. Allow the Holy Spirit to give you peace, and then let it go. When you give your grieving to Jesus, He heals the wounds so your memories don’t hurt you. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. (Mat 5:4)

Grief can come in many forms for many reasons, not only when a loved one dies. If a dream you’ve held onto blows up, it’s ok to grieve, but don’t hold on to it any more. God has other plans, better plans.

Take time to mourn when it’s necessary and let the Comforter do His job.

Our Lives Must Bear Fruit

When we live in Jesus, our lives will be fruitful.

God requires us to be fruitful.

Jesus gave some dire warnings about how we should be living. It’s pretty clear that we need to live in Him and we need to be fruitful.

Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down. Why does it use up the ground?’ (Lk 13:7)

If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered, and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. (Jn 15:6)

This is not a pretty picture. We can’t be Christians in name only. We can’t sit in church, listen to sermons and go home having met our obligation for the week. If we have no relationship with Jesus at all, we risk being cut off and left to burn.

I’m sorry that sounds provocative, but that’s what it says. No one can take you out of God’s hands, but if you’re not in His hands to begin with, you’re going to be in big trouble.

The opposite is true. When we do live in Him, we can expect that our lives will be fruitful. We will have something to point to and thank God for. Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. (Phl 2:12) In other words, make sure you know God and have the fruit to show for it.

Touching Jesus Answers Prayer

Touching Jesus brings healing and provision.

Jesus is the source of all our needs.

When the woman with the issue of blood touched the hem of Jesus’ garment, she was healed, because she needed healing. What if she was destitute and needed money? What if she touched the hem of His garment with the sure assurance that the touch would bring the provision that she needed?

You see where I’m going here. I can think of a hundred scenarios where touching the hem of His garment would meet every need. Jesus would stop and turn around and say, I felt that! According to your faith, let it be done.

When you come to Christ, He moves into your heart. Touching the hem of His garment is as close as turning your heart to Him. He is the source off all that we need, a wealth of provision for any area we need help in.

Just as the woman made a physical move to reach Him, we have to make an effort to touch Him as well. Knowing that He can provide is different from pressing into Him with faith and assurance that He will provide. Try it. Reach out to Him in your spirit and see if He won’t flood you with all that you ask for. His healing and provision is as active today as it was for the woman who was healed.

Don’t Be Careless With The Truths Of God

Meditate on the truths of God.

The truths of God are gems to be treasured.

When you listen to good teaching, don’t let truth slip through your fingers. It’s too easy to hear something profound, nod in agreement, then pass on to the next gem. Hold onto those. They are given out for a reason.

Write things down. Keep  a notebook of thoughts on truth that you collect. Meditate on them. When you’re reading the Bible, it’s ok to make notes and underline parts that speak to you. They will continue to speak to you when you come upon them again.

The great truths of God are valuable and we are so quick to be on to the next great thing. It’s part of the ever learning, never coming to the knowledge of the truth syndrome. Don’t take in what you won’t consume. If you’re going to listen, or read, then learn from it.

Allow the truth to be absorbed into your spirit so it becomes part of you. Truth is meant to lead you to godliness. If that is not happening, then you have wasted the gems. Go back to them. Dig them out and allow the Holy Spirit to give you deeper meaning. You will gain wisdom and insight that you won’t get any other way.

God’s Answers Can Come In Disguise

Don't assume that God has not answered.

God’s answers can come in disguise.

God loves to mess with us sometimes. We pray for something we really need and He sends something that doesn’t look at all what we asked for. But what exactly has He sent? Maybe it is our answer in disguise.

When Israel was up against the Philistines with no victory in sight, God sent them a boy. No one believed that David was the answer to their problem. If they lost, the entire nation went into slavery. It was a huge gamble. A HUGE gamble. But God’s answer was exactly what was needed. Not only was Israel delivered from oppression, they found a new king who would usher in the greatest age that Israel has ever known.

God, send us more Davids! Ask God to help you see His hand action so you don’t dismiss the very answer you are looking for. Are you looking for treasure? Then don’t throw you the ugly looking oyster. It may have your pearl of great price.

Knowing when to recognize God’s provision when it’s not obvious requires communion with Him. If you spend quite, devotional time with Him, you begin to recognize the move of His Spirit. You develop hearing, so when you ask for confirmation, you’ll hear His voice. Spend time with Him, then look around. The answer may be waiting for you already.

It’s Good To Be A Hungry Soul

God satisfies the hunger of our soul.

God fills the longing in our soul.

There are people who will take their five talents and make five more and people who will bury it in the ground and do nothing with it. For the ones who want to invest, to find more of what they’ve been give, God has promise. For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness. (Ps 107:9) Continue reading

Know How to Keep Your Joy

Learn how to keep you joy.

Keep your joy when you get discouraged.

Don’t let discouragement rob your joy. I’m not kidding. If you are discouraged, then it may seem that you are already robbed of joy, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Keep one hand in the Lord’s and you’ll get through it.

The hard part of keeping your joy in the middle of a rough patch is actually taking the steps that you know you need to take to keep from going under. Listen to praise music. Maybe that’s all it takes. Call a friend who will lift you up. Not everyone is good to talk to when you’re down. Some people like it there and you don’t need that. Do what you have to do to find your joy.

Once you give into depression and despair, you’ve opened the door to a lot a negative feelings that will be hard to displace later on. God understands discouragement, so He’s always there with us. Just remember that. Call out to Him. He’s very encouraging and know exactly what will cheer you up.

When you can face a discouraging situation and keep your joy, you shatter the attack of the enemy to take you down. Joy is in the Spirit of God, so it’s always yours. Keep it close and you’ll be fine.

The Body of Christ is There to Help

We are supposed to lift up each other.

The body of Christ is there to help.

There’s a reason to be part of a church body. We need each other. Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much more as you see the day approaching. (Heb 10:25)

To exhort means to build up, or lift up. If you have friends who know you and love you, you have a net to fall into when you need it. Everyone will need to be lifted up at some point. Your friends are the best ones to turn to. You don’t have to explain anything to them. They understand and they know how to pray for you.

That’s why the church is a body. We need all the parts, not just to function as a church, but to help each other when we need it. Don’t hesitate to get help, ask for prayer, or counseling. We are here for each other. No one wants to see you fall or in pain. But you have to let people know.

The body of Christ is a beautiful thing. When it functions properly, it’s a safe place to grow spiritually and emotionally. Make friends. Be a friend. Be willing to help someone else when they need it. You’ll need it yourself some day.

Know When to Stop and Let God

Work without faith is dead

Learn when to stop and get out of God’s way.

Faith without works is dead, but we need to be sensitive to knowing when to get out of the way. The church has a history of doing way too much  “work” and not enough faith. The fields are ripe for harvest. There’s a lot of work to do, but learning how to do that work with God instead of for God is a huge lesson.

We are no longer servants, but heirs with Christ, so we should hear God speaking to us as an amazing Father. When we hear His voice in our lives, we know when to walk and when to rest. There are times when we need to roll up our sleeves and get dirt under our nails. And there are more times when we need to step aside and let God do what He does best.

Walking in that balance of works and faith takes maturity, and the first step in growth is admitting that we need to grow. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you’ve been getting in His way. You can’t stress a problem to make it solved. You’ll be amazed at what happens when you do what you know to do, then give the rest to Him. Don’t take on God’s part. You’ll never get His results. Work without faith is dead.
